One Fabulous Year

I can't believe the year is over. I can't wait to see what the future holds for this group of students. They are a remarkable group and have so much potential! The sky is the limit.  I believe in them.  I hope they all dream big and go after everything they want in life.

Math Madness

We invited the school in to see what we have been doing during guided math! The students taught everything. They said by the end, they were exhausted and didn't want to talk anymore! Haha, but it was a great time and some of the students couldn't believe that older grade levels were struggling with some of our centers.

Find a pinky!

Students are comparing predictions and sharing why they believe it! To find a partner, we put pinkies up and find another pinky! Hehe, they love it, and I love seeing them so excited to share their predictions!

Science!

We have been reading about how children can be young scientists so we decided to do the same experiment from our book.

Our first official closed reading!

These students rocked our first closed reading session! So proud of them. They are such fantastic readers!

Summarize our morning.

Our target this week was "I can summarize a text, event or movie".

Bringing life to math..

Last night I went to a conference and learned about bringing math to life. So it gave me some great ideas for what to do today before our pizza party.. The students graphed our pizza choices, figured out how many pizzas we need to order based on that one large pizza only feeds 4 people. They did a great job! They also calculated the two digit math to make sure they were charging us the correct price. Very cool!

Summarizing Groundhog's Day!

Today for reading buddies we learned all about ground hogs and Groundhog's Day. Did you know that when groundhogs make their burrows they dig up 700 pounds of dirt? Believe it or not... That was one of the cool facts we learned today.  Students also learned the history behind Groundhogs Day that it all started in Pennsylvania , brought to us from Europe. Students then predicted whether or not they thought Phil the groundhog would see his shadow on February 2nd. On February 2nd we will see who made the correct prediction and who did not. Then of course to bring it all back to our comprehension strategy, we also worked on summarizing our morning with our reading buddies. The students did a great job we first rain brainstormed what were the big ideas of our morning and how could we summarize it in one or two sentences. The students decided that to summarize our morning we could simply state that with our reading buddies we learned all about groundhogs and Groundhog Day.

Twister....

During math centers, students have the opportunity to visit twister center. At this center students are asked to place their hand or foot on a place value that has ones tens or hundreds. The students have had a blast and it helps reinforce understanding place value and what the numbers represent.

Text to self connection inspired projects!

We have a whole bunch of projects culminating right now. Students in this group read a realistic fiction book about a student who researched an animal and created a diorama.  They did just that. They researched via books, ipads and presented today! They all did a fantastic job. I recorded them and am going to try to get them uploaded to the blog soon!

We read a fable and students had to identify the main idea.
They did a great job!
